Dr. Hurley wanted to be a doctor for has long as he can remember. He started practicing medicine on his brother in his dad’s pharmacy. After saving his brother from drowning in an icy pond as a young man, he became dedicated to becoming a doctor.
Doctor Don chose Osteopathic Medicine because it is founded in the belief the physician should treat the whole person instead of just their symptoms. Treating the whole person allows the patient to achieve their personal best health. He is Board Certified and a Fellow with the American Academy of Family Physicians. Don is also one of two Certified Physician Investigators in South Carolina.
Commander Hurley retired from the US Navy after a career of caring throughout the world. During his vast and multinational experiences in the Navy he was the NATO Baltic Fleet surgeon, the South Atlantic Fleet Chief Medical Officer, Senior Medical Officer at Parris Island USMC Recruit Training Base and MCAS Beaufort. He was the sports medicine physician for several USN teams. He was faculty for the Bethesda Medical School, the residency program at Naval Hospital Charleston and MUSC. He authored the original text for Navy Medical Officers afloat and a Disaster Medicine Manual distributed to naval forces throughout South America. He co-authored the disaster plan for the Brazilian Navy Hospital “Marchello Dias” in Rio de Janero and for the Austrian Army. He is a cofounder of the South Carolina Disaster Medical Response Team and a Charter member of Homeland Security. For his service he was twice awarded the Navy Commendation Medal and the Navy Achievement Medal.
Dr. Hurley opened his Family Medicine and Urgent Care clinic in West Ashley in 2002. He is passionate about providing the best medical and urgent care for his patients. Dr. Hurley’s patients know he is on call for them 24/7. He has been rated one of the Best Physicians in the country three times. He was chosen to be the Primary Care Physician for the White House in Savannah at the G8 conference, caring for thousands of international diplomats. Don is considered an excellent family doctor, highly ranked clinician and premier diagnostician. He is the number one go to doctor for many physicians around Charleston.
Dr. Hurley believes in spending as much time as necessary to get to know his patients and their family. He fights to make sure they get the best medical care available.
Dr. Hurley attended medical school in Missouri and graduated the residency program at Naval Hospital Charleston. He worked for many years with Marines where he became interested in treating and healing muscle and joint injuries. This interest prompted the navy to send him to attend a fellowship at the Hughston Sports Medicine Clinic. He recently participated in an international Prolotherapy training program, treating hundreds of indigent local patients.
He has advocated and initiated several preventive care initiatives at his office and has partnered to provide the best medical services at his office.
Doctor Don enjoys a rich personal life surrounded by family and friends. He taught Sunday School for over a decade. He and his wife Andrea have hosted over 9 exchange students from Russia, Kazakhstan, Norway, Germany, Armenia, Brazil, France and England.
